Business Studies - GCSE

What will I study in Business Studies?

The GCSE Business Studies syllabus requires students to study a wide variety of aspects of business. The syllabus is split into three separate units.

Unit 1 – Introduction to Small Business

This unit focuses on small businesses - in particular, it looks at how an entrepreneur may spot a business opportunity and show enterprise to put this opportunity into practice.

Unit 2 – Investigating Small Business

This unit is assessed internally and students conduct their own research into a local small business. Students are provided with a list of five questions and are given time to conduct research and planning. They are marked on the quality of their research, analysis and evaluations.

Unit 3 – Building a Business

This unit focuses on marketing and meeting the needs of customers. There is also a focus on the wider business world and the financial needs of a business.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by two separate written papers and an internally assessed unit. The first unit is assessed with multiple choice questions and lasts for 45 minutes. The third unit is 1 hour 45 minutes long and comprises a mixture of multiple choice questions and written questions. Unit 1 and 2 are each worth 25% with unit 3 being worth 50% of the full GCSE.

Who will teach me?

Ciara McPolin joined Lansdowne in 2011 having worked as a professional accountant for several years before completing her PGCE. She brings industry experience and has a particular interest in UK and European economics.

Stephen Burrows read Economics at Durham University and holds a PGCE. He has taught Business Studies at Lansdowne for more than 12 years, and has lectured in Economics at City University.

Which subjects complement Business Studies?

Business Studies requires knowledge of basic mathematics when making calculations of profit or calculating a business’ break-even point. Being able to structure a long answer requires skills learnt in English classes.

Which careers can Business Studies lead to?

Business Studies GCSE can lead to a wide range of careers. The syllabus provides knowledge of wide range of knowledge and this can be used in a wide range of careers. It does provide knowledge of the broader business world which is useful for future careers in the City.
